The Republic of Gambia, located in West Africa, has banned all timber exports from the country after a BBC investigation found “vast” amounts of West African rosewood were being illegally trafficked through the country.
West African rosewood, which is endangered and protected, was reportedly trafficked through the country from Senegal, mainly ending up in China, where it is used to make furniture, according to the BBC.
All timber export licenses in The Gambia have been revoked as part of the new ban.
Rosewood is one of the most trafficked wildlife products in the world, according to the BBC.
