Construction employment increased in 31 states in June compared with pre-pandemic levels in February 2020, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America.
However, compared with February 2020, construction employment still lagged in 18 states and D.C., and it remained unchanged in West Virginia.
“Construction employment has stalled in many states, even though contractors have plenty of projects needing more employees, due to a dearth of qualified workers,” stated Ken Simonson, AGC’s chief economist. “Only half the states had an increase in construction employment last month.”
The largest June construction employment growth compared with February 2020 was in Utah, which added 16,100 jobs, a 14.1% increase. The biggest drop in construction employment since February 2020 was in New York, which shed 36,300 jobs, an 8.9% plunge.
Month-over-month, 25 states and D.C. added construction jobs, 23 states shed construction jobs and Hawaii and West Virginia remained stagnant.
