Brazil Court Set to Reactivate International Fund To Protect Amazon

Brazil’s Supreme Court is on track to order the government to reactivate the Amazon Fund, an international fund designed to protect the Amazon rainforest from destruction, Reuters reported.

The fund, which was contributed to by multiple nations, was frozen in 2019 by Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro’s administration, which has weakened environmental protection measures in the country. Deforestation in the Amazon has subsequently surged under Bolsonaro’s presidency. On Oct. 30, Bolsonaro lost his reelection campaign to leftist rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

A final ruling for reactivating the Amazon Fund is expected Nov. 3.
