Brazil’s President-Elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has pledged to bolster the country’s efforts to protect the Amazon rainforest, which saw a dramatic surge in deforestation under President Jair Bolsonaro’s administration, Vox reported.
“Let’s fight for zero deforestation,” Vox reported Lula saying after his victory on Oct. 30. “Brazil is ready to resume its leading role in the fight against the climate crisis, protecting all our biomes, especially the Amazon forest.”
Lula previously served two terms as Brazil’s president between 2003 and 2011, during which deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon declined more than 80%, according to Vox.
