The European Parliament and Council of the European Union have reached an agreement on a new law that would ensure goods that enter the EU do not contribute to deforestation or forest degradation in the EU or elsewhere.
“Since the EU is a major economy and consumer of these commodities, this step will help stop a significant share of global deforestation and forest degradation, in turn reducing greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss,” the European Commission said in a statement.
After the law is adopted, relevant companies will be required to practice “strict due diligence” when products, including timber, are placed on the EU market and ensure they meet the new standards.
