“Labor is tight, materials prices are increasing, interest rates are rising, and some sectors of the economy are announcing layoffs,” AGC Chief Economist Ken Simonson stated.
Construction employment shrank in 47 metro areas and remained unchanged in 43.
Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas, added the most construction jobs year-over-year in December with 18,800 jobs. The biggest decline in construction employment was in Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Fla., which shed 7,500 jobs from December 2021 to December 2022.
