Total manufacturing employment dropped by 2,000 from June to July to 12.985 million, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
It’s the third decline in manufacturing employment so far in 2023, according to an analysis by the Hardwood Federation. Year to date, manufacturing has added 11,000 workers, a slowdown compared with the 385,000 added during the same period in 2022.
“Total manufacturing employment has remained relatively resilient despite a challenging economic environment in the sector, including weaker demand, production and an uncertain outlook,” the Hardwood Federation stated.
Employment in wood products manufacturing alone was 421,800 in July, down by 1,700 compared with June employment in that segment.
