Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has pledged to end deforestation in Brazil’s portion of the Amazon by 2030. But leaders from eight South American countries failed to agree on a common goal to eliminate deforestation in the Amazon during a recent summit hosted in Brazil, CNN reported.
Member states of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization met for the first time in 14 years to address environmental challenges in the Amazon, but a common policy could not be reached. Instead, the leaders issued a “broad pledge” to preserve the Amazon that did not make mention of Silva’s 2030 goal of ending deforestation, according to the Associated Press.
