Deforestation in Brazil’s portion of the Amazon rainforest declined 66.1% year-over-year in August, Environment Minister Marina Silva said on Tuesday, Reuters reported. Satellite data from Brazilian space research agency INPE showed that a total of 271.38 square miles of rainforest were cleared during the month, the lowest level of destruction recorded since 2018.

Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has pledged to end deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon by 2030. Deforestation surged in the Amazon during the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro, who lost reelection to Silva and left office Dec. 31, 2022.
