Deforestation in Brazilian Amazon Drops 66.1% in August

Deforestation in Brazil’s portion of the Amazon rainforest declined 66.1% year-over-year in August, Environment Minister Marina Silva said on Tuesday, Reuters reported. Satellite data from Brazilian space research agency INPE showed that a total of 271.38 square miles of rainforest were cleared during the month, the lowest level of destruction recorded since 2018.

Deforestation Brazil’s Amazon declined 48% in the first eight months of 2023 compared with the same period in 2022.
