The share of women in the construction industry reached a record high in 2023, making up 10.8% of the workforce, according to the Current Population Survey.
A record of 1.28 million women worked in construction last year—the largest number since the survey began tracking labor force statistics in 2002.
Women in construction are primarily employed in sales, business operations, management and administrative support, according to CPS.
Sales and administrative occupations employed the largest number of women within the industry. Women accounted for 66% of workers in sales and administration in 2023.
Construction and maintenance occupations make up the majority of jobs in the industry; however, women account for only 4% of those positions.
