Deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon dropped 30.6% in the year-over-year period beginning in August 2023, the lowest level in nine years, Reuters reported.
Roughly 2,428 square miles of forest were destroyed in that 12-month period.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has promised to step up enforcement of environmental laws to rein in deforestation and stop illegal deforestation in the Amazon by 2030, Reuters reported.
Additionally, deforestation in Brazil’s savannah, known as Cerrado, decreased by 25.7%, the first decline in five years.
