A Life of Ambition and Entrepreneurship
Born in Iowa, and from his humble beginnings on a farm, Jim faced challenges early in life, including losing fingers in an accident while working. Yet, that never deterred his determination. He ventured into the electronics industry, starting with Honeywell Co. and later working at Prime Computer, where he thrived as a problem solver and innovator.
In 1985, with an entrepreneurial spirit, Jim founded Specialty Forest Products, a wholesale hardwood flooring and supply company. His vision and dedication grew Specialty into an established business with three locations, two in New Hampshire and the flagship branch in Hopedale, Mass. Specialty will celebrate its 40th anniversary this year.
Jim’s love for sales and creative problem-solving extended beyond his industry—he once bought a truckload of tractors just to sell them, and he did! His ability to connect with people and see opportunities where others saw obstacles defined his business journey.
Tony Marini, manager at Specialty Forest Products’ Hopedale location since 2000, recalled, “I was 18 years old when he hired me. He hated being called ‘Mr. Van Beek.’ I was a kid, I didn’t call adults by their first name. He had to pull me aside into his office and say ‘Look, Tony, I get what you’re doing. I appreciate it, but if you’re gonna work for me, I need you to call me Jim,’ … You couldn’t not love this guy.”
Joe Buckley, who worked with Jim for over 40 years, said, "Jim treated his employees and customers like one large family. Working for Jim, I learned it was all about Specialty. We all worked together to make it bigger and better. When I first met Jim, he was the one-man band ... he had his phone and a small truck and warehouse He would take the orders and deliver them out himself, setting the foundation for all of us. We are all standing on some very broad shoulders.
A Passion for the Outdoors & Community
Jim shared a devoted life with his beloved wife, Lynn, and together they built a life grounded in love, resilience, and a passion for hard work. Outside of work, Jim was a true outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, boating, volleyball, and cycling. He took on the bike-a-thon Pan-Mass Challenge twice, proving his dedication to both adventure and philanthropy. His woodworking skills were equally admired, crafting pieces that reflected his artistry and patience.
Honoring the Trailblazers of the Hardwood Flooring Industry
The hardwood flooring industry is more than a business—it is a fellowship built on craftsmanship, dedication, and deep-rooted connections. Many who step into our field make it their life’s work, shaping and strengthening the industry over decades, and Jim was one of those pioneers—his vision, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit paved the way for many who followed. Honoring industry trailblazers doesn’t have to be reserved for memorials. We owe it to those we admire, respect and follow to take the time to celebrate, appreciate, and uplift them while we still have the chance.
If someone in our flooring fellowship has guided, mentored, or influenced you, share that admiration today. Let’s ensure their legacy is felt not just in reflection, but in gratitude.
Godspeed, Jim.
