The share of young adults interested in a career in the construction trades doubled from 3% in 2016 to 6% in 2026, according to a survey conducted by the National Association of Home Builders. The biggest benefits they see in a job in the trades are good pay (73%) and the ability to obtain useful skills (65%).

Out of the young adults who reported no clear sense of career direction, 51% of them would be reluctant to consider a career in the construction trades no matter the pay. This share is down from 63% in 2016, indicating more young people are now open to jobs in trades.
When asked if they would give the trades a second thought if compensation were high enough, 30% of trades-reluctant respondents said they would, up from 18% in 2016.
