Construction Hiring Remains ‘Extremely’ Slow

There were 224,000 construction job openings on the last day of March, a monthly increase of 23,000, and year-over-year decrease of 54,000, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey.

The lack of churn is expected to hold until economic uncertainty eases, according to ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu. “Construction industry hiring rebounded from February’s historically low level but remains extremely subdued,” Basu said. “Contractors also remain reluctant to fire workers; the layoff/discharge rate fell to the slowest pace since early 2024 and is lower than at any point prior to 2022,” he added.

Industry quits also remained low, increasing from 134,000 to 139,000 month-over-month, and dropping 14.2% year-over-year.
