Construction Job Openings Climb as Home Building Stays Soft

Open positions in the construction sector rose from 266,000 in April to 298,000 in May, coming in above the 222,000 recorded a year earlier, according to the National Association of Home Builders’ analysis of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. The construction job openings rate climbed to 3.5%, up from 2.6% a year ago.

The gains were largely attributed to nonresidential construction, as the residential sector remains weak. Home building employment declined over the past year, while other segments, such as data center construction, expanded.

The construction layoff rate increased from 1.5% in April to 2.1% in May, while the quits rate fell from 1.7% to 1.3% month-over-month.
