Cole Smith of C.A. Woodworks Inc. in Broadus, Mont., had his doubts that the sagging side of this home he was set to refinish was due to a foundation issue. As he tells it:

"The whole home had vertical grain fir to sand. Our customer said she was going to have a foundation specialist 'jack up' the sagging side of the house and wondered if we could go ahead with refinishing. I expressed my doubt that it was entirely a foundation issue and suggested we remove some floor to get a better idea. Turned out, these joists have been rotting for longer than I've been alive, and finally fell through … along with the saturated plywood. We found ourselves with a rebuild. We smelled so much like mold I went home and burned my clothes."
