Tom Hanson at Warwick, R.I.-based Thomas Hanson Hardwood Flooring says he gets startled on jobs all the time when someone’s trying to get his attention while he’s deeply engrossed in sanding, but one scare really stuck with him. As he tells it:
“About five years ago it was late at night, and I was sanding in a house right on the street, where the sidewalk is right next to the house. Music really gets me going, so I was listening to Metallica and singing—I’m probably tone deaf, but I sing so loud I can almost hear myself over the sound of the sander and the vacuum. I was singing along in a part of the song where I’m yelling, ‘Aaaaaaaaaaagh!’ when a woman walking by put her face right up to the window—just as I was walking by with my Hummel. It was super dark out, but her face was lit up by the house lights, and it startled me so much I screamed, which made her scream! I told her, ‘You scared the hell out of me!’ and she said, ‘I thought you were being electrocuted!’ Everyone says I’m a really bad singer, and after I told my wife about this, she said, ‘I think that’s all the proof we needed.’”
