During Greenbuild 2012, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) displayed the U.S.'s first expo booth to bear FSC Project Certification.
Audited by third-party certification firm SCS Global Services, the FSC's booth-which used curved plywood structures in order to resemble a bird's nest-incorporated FSC-certified wood. To achieve full Project Certification, a project manager must ensure that at least half the wood used is sourced from FSC-certified or post-consumer reclaimed sources; the remainder must come from FSC Controlled Wood or verified reclaimed sources.
The booth design was the product of a competition FSC held at the Boston Architectural College; the winning nest-like design came from student Jillian Gaviani. Next, Dave Nyberg of Fairfax, Calif.-based Nyberg Construction and Juan Figueroa's team at San Francisco, Calif.-based Woodtech constructed the booth.
The booth featured PureBond decorative hardwood plywood from Columbia Forest Products and hickory flooring from Shaw Industries Inc. (Dalton, Ga.). Materials from the booth were donated to the Day Caring Pre School in Fairfax, Calif., and San Andreas Continuation High School in Hollister, Calif.
According to the FSC, one Greenbuild attendee commented, "I saw your booth from across the floor. I wasn't sure what it was, so I had to come check it out."
