Contrary to popular worldwide perception, China, the world's the world's largest importer, consumer and exporter of wood and wood products, strongly opposes illegal logging and adheres to a strategy of sustainably managing its forest resources, according to the country's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei.
Media outlets worldwide, including Hardwood Floors, recently reported on a report from London-based NGO watchdog Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) that said China was standing on the sidelines in the fight against illegal logging. The report also labeled China the single-largest international consumer of illegal wood.
That image was refuted Nov. 29 by Hong during a press conference, a translation of which was later posted at the website for the Chinese Consulate General. Following are Hong's full remarks about China's position on illegal logging:
"On your second question, China's position is clear and consistent with regards to fighting illegal logging and trade. We strongly oppose and fight illegal logging and trade, adhere to the strategy of cooperative management over forest resources featuring mutual benefit and sustainable development. We are ready to work with the international community to make even greater contribution to the poverty alleviation and economic development of forest regions, pushing for the sustainable operation of forests, safeguarding normal trade of forest products and strengthening the protection of global forest resources."
