The Milwaukee Buck’s 1977 basketball court floor that made Milwaukee famous has proven difficult to hold on to.
Its most recent owner, Ben Koller, said recently that he would no longer lead the project that aims to display the renowned MECCA basketball floor locally. It will be put up for sale, and back into limbo, according to the Milwaukee Business Journal.
After the team moved stadiums in 1988, the court was packed up and forgotten until, as reported in the February/March 2014 issue, it was discovered for sale on an architectural salvage website in 2010.
That was no place for a floor designed by renowned New York City artist Robert Indiana, so Greg Koller, owner of a Milwaukee wood floor contracting company, bought it for $20,000.
He passed away soon after the purchase, and the court was handed to his son, Ben.
Now Ben Koller, after three years of searching for space to display the court, is ready to give stewardship of the court to someone else. He said there are four possible locations, but a buyer will need to come forward before any talks of exhibiting the court begin.
