The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certifications, the largest forest certification system in the world with more than 240 million hectares in its system, is using the U.N. Climate Change Conference underway in Paris to demand global commitments to sustainable forestry, according to a statement from the organization.
PEFC is hosting its annual Forest Certification Week at the climate talks in Paris (COP 21), and brining together more than 100 experts, including heads of national forest certification systems from 40 countries, to discuss forest-based ways to address climate change.
The experts participating in PEFC’s Forest Certification Week program are focusing on three main issues:
1) How to increase certification for small, family and community-owned forests. 2) How to optimize sustainable forest management requirements to lessen the impact of climate change. 3) How to increase use of certified forest products by companies, governments and consumers.
“We need a global agreement at COP 21 with clear actions and firm commitments, outlining effective pathways to address climate change,” said Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC International, in a statement.
