Clarence Holliman got a great deal on wood flooring material, but he’s still short the money necessary to make his dream a reality—to return the gym floor at the Paul Laurence Dunbar School in Texas to its former glory and preserve a piece of black history, according to WFAA8.
The school opened in the 1920s in Mineral Wells, Texas, outside of Fort Worth, to teach black children. The gym was added after segregation ended, but the school eventually closed and the facility became dilapidated.
Today, the gym is filled with thousands of wood flooring strips, tossed into piles and awaiting installation. Holliman does not have installation skills, but he has vision.
"I envision it looking like one of the best gyms in the State of Texas," he told WFAA.
Holliman and the 501c3 organization set up to fund the renovation, the Paul Laurence Dunbar Community Group Inc., are asking for support in the form of donations or volunteers.
He is hoping to raise enough money to get the flooring professionally installed.
