The basketball court in The Master’s Academy of Orlando, Fla., is the first black high school court in the country, athletic director Steve Denny told Athletic Business, WFB’s sister publication.
The bold color choice came during a scheduled refinishing of the court floor and was completed by S. Graham Enterprises Inc., out of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. The color was achieved using a water-based stain.
The court was unveiled earlier this month, and everyone in the program was happy with the outcome. But, like anything colored black, the tough part is keeping it clean.
“The biggest challenge is keeping it fresh from scuff marks. That's nearly impossible, but we work hard to keep our facilities looking as sharp as we can,” Denny said. “It's sort of like buying a black car, that first ding or scratch really stands out...at least to us.”
