The sale and harvest of Brazilian mahogany has been under a moratorium imposed by the Brazilian Institute for Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) since 2001. In 2002, it was listed in appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
In order for Agrocortex to export mahogany, it needs a CITES permit from IBAMA. After monitoring the company’s administrative policies and approving its management plan, IBAMA is in the process of granting a permit, according to Global Wood Markets Info.
Agrocortex’s mahogany harvest operation has also been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
