Sustainable Brazilian Mahogany Back on the Export Market

Agrocortex will be the first Brazilian timber company since 2002 to export native mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), according to Madeira Total.

The sale and harvest of Brazilian mahogany has been under a moratorium imposed by the Brazilian Institute for Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) since 2001. In 2002, it was listed in appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

In order for Agrocortex to export mahogany, it needs a CITES permit from IBAMA. After monitoring the company’s administrative policies and approving its management plan, IBAMA is in the process of granting a permit, according to Global Wood Markets Info.

Agrocortex’s mahogany harvest operation has also been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
