Armstrong Flooring (Lancaster, Pa.) had a loss of $2.6 million in the first quarter of 2016 compared with a $38.6 million profit during the same period of 2015.
The dramatic change is in part due to the discontinuation of the company’s European flooring operation in the first quarter of 2015, which increased the company’s “gains” by $42.5 million during that period, according to a company statement.
Sales in the first quarter of 2016 were $284.4 million, an increase of 9.6 percent compared with the $259.4 million in sales reported during the first quarter of 2015. Operating income decreased in the first quarter of 2016 35.3 percent to a loss of $4.6 million.
Net sales for the wood flooring segment were $120.5 million, a 17.4 percent year-over-year increase.
These results represent the final quarter prior to Armstrong’s separation into two independent entities, Armstrong Flooring and Armstrong World Industries. The separation became official April 1.
