Shaw Industries Inc. (Dalton, Ga.) produced 455 million pounds of waste in 2015, a decrease of more than 70 million pounds compared with 2014, according to the company’s annual sustainability report.
Of the total waste, just 7 percent was sent to landfills, while 57.7 percent was externally recycled, 18.1 was used to create energy (“energy recovered”) and 17.2 percent was internally recycled.
“Our sophisticated Material Resource Management (MRM) system helps us consistently categorize, measure and channel waste toward the best possible use, whether that is recycling or reuse, within Shaw or through another industry,” the report said.
The company’s goals for 2030 include reducing actual water intensity per pound of finished product by 50 percent, reducing waste to landfills and hazardous waste by 100 percent, design 100 percent of products to Cradle to Cradle protocols and achieve an incident rate of zero, according to the report.
“Shaw is committed to continuous improvement and constantly driving innovation into our business based upon our perpetual quest for a deeper understanding of the needs of our customers, associates and communities,” said Vance Bell, Shaw chairman and CEO, in a statement. “Our annual sustainability report reflects our progress and our continued investment in what our internal and external stakeholders deem most important.”
