The 2016–2017 ban was instated because of large-scale deforestation in recent years. The government wants logging to continue, but only if its occurs with a strong focus on conservation.
Myanmar has two plans for the resumption of logging. The first plan would limit logging to one period every two years. The second plan would allow only logging for self-sufficiency. A third option is to forgo resumption but allow more imports of products that to meet local requirements for raw materials.
