A new tool forged by Google and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization will give countries the ability to determine how preventing deforestation will reduce carbon emissions, according to Eco-Business.com.
The tool is called Collect Earth. It consists of collections of high-resolution satellite imagery and cloud computing services that will allow countries to “track land use change, account for carbon and develop forest and land use policies,” the report said.
“Forests are one of the largest and most cost-effective responses we have to climate change,” said Helen Clark, administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, in a statement.
Forest loss and degradation is responsible for more carbon emissions than the entire transportation sector combined, according to Eco-Business.
The tool is free and available online.
