The United States Department of Commerce has initiated an antidumping duty and countervailing duty investigation of imports of softwood lumber products, including flooring, from Canada.
The investigation will determine if Canadian softwood was dumped at less than its fair value into the U.S. between Jan. 1–Dec. 31, 2015. It will also determine if financial assistance from governments gave Canadian forestry companies an unfair advantage.
The investigation is in response to a petition filed in November by the Committee Overseeing Action for Lumber International Trade Investigation or Negotiations, a group comprised of American lumber companies, including Sierra Pacific Industries and Weyerhaeuser.
The U.S. International Trade Commission will make its preliminary injury determinations by Jan. 9. If the ITC concludes imports did injure or threaten to injure the U.S. softwood industry, the Commerce Department will make its preliminary countervailing-duty determination in February and its antidumping determination in May.
