Myanmar has captured 40,000 tons of illegal timber since April 2016, according to The Star
”There has been illegal trade in timber in Myanmar from the junta era to the present day, so we can’t say that the illegal trade has peaked this year. But we can say that by tonnage, we seized the highest amount of timber ever this financial year," Forest Ministry Director Tin Tun told The Star.
In the Bago region of Myanmar, Deputy Head of the Regional Forest Department Lin Htin told news source Eleven that 4,974 tons of illegal timber was captured in all of 2016. The seizures also included a total of 352 vehicles, and 745 people were detained.
