Hardwood consumption in Europe is falling in part due to constraints placed on the supply side by European Union harvesting level regulations and the larger share of high-quality hardwood being exported to China and other Asian countries, according to Fordaq.
The problem is also compounded by diminished access to tropical wood, as certain countries have reduced log exports, the report said.
On a smaller scale, as more wood is leaving Europe and less wood is coming in, Fordaq said the United Kingdom’s hardwood production has remained the same at around 1.77 cubic feet per year for the past 10 years.
