Greenpeace International will not renew its membership with the Forest Stewardship Council, stating that it has lost confidence in the effectiveness of the global timber certification organization it helped found 25 years ago.
Greenpeace said in a statement that the FSC is not consistently applied across regions and that by not releasing digital maps of its certified commercial forests, the organization lacks sufficient transparency.
The nonprofit said it still believes robust forest certification can be a helpful tool in the battle against illegal logging and deforestation, “…but we no longer have the confidence that FSC alone can consistently guarantee enough protection, especially when forests are facing multiple threats.”
FSC, an independent nonprofit, says it administers one of the most rigorous and credible forest certifications for the wood industry.
