A man in Savannah, Ga., is recovering after shooting a 3-inch penny nail into his left thigh while building a wooden play pirate ship, according to Newsflare.
The worker, Derek Hinkley, was picking up the nail gun on the job site when it brushed against his leg and misfired into his thigh. After the nail lodged into his leg, Hinkley, seated on the ground, asked his friend Chris to grab him a pair of plyers so he could try to extract the nail.
“The nails we were using in that gun are ring shanked, meaning they have ribs near the end so that they are less likely to pull out of wood,” Hinkley told Newsflare. It didn’t stop him from attempting to pull it, however. With Chris filming, Hinkley wrapped the plyers around the nail head, gave a small yank, then winced from the pain and slowly laid back down.
Hinkley continued filming himself in the ambulance on his way to the hospital, where the nail was safely extracted. He even managed to return to the site that evening to help Chris complete the pirate ship project.
Nail guns cause an estimated 37,000 emergency room visits each year, according to Fox News, with 68% of cases involving construction workers.
