Survey: Flooring Pros Consider Their Trade the Hardest to Learn

Among construction trades, flooring contractors were the mostly likely to consider their craft the “most difficult to master,” according to a survey by CraftJack, a lead generation company.

The survey found that 36% of flooring contractors identified their specialty as the “most difficult,” which was the highest percentage compared with other trades. Flooring contractors were followed in the survey by cleaning (30%) and carpentry professionals (27%).

All surveyed trades were more likely to consider themselves the “most physically demanding,” however. When asked whether they identified their job as the “most physically demanding” among the trades, flooring contractors were the seventh most likely to agree, with 43% answering yes. Contractors in painting and staining were the mostly likely to say their craft is the most physically demanding at 61%, followed by carpentry (54%), electrical (54%) and carpet cleaning (49%).

When contractors in all trades were asked which trade was the most physically demanding, flooring received 4% of the vote.

When contractors were asked which trade was the most difficult to master, they chose electrical (23%), other (21%), carpentry (13%) and HVAC (7%). Flooring came in at 3%.

The survey also asked consumers which trade they perceived as the most physically demanding, and roofing received the majority of the vote with 20%. Carpentry received 3% of the vote and flooring received 0%. When asked which trade they perceived as the most difficult to master, consumers also chose electrical (38%), other (21%), carpentry (12%) and HVAC (9%). Flooring received 0%.

The CraftJack report surveyed 1,609 contractors and 652 consumers.
