High School Gym Floor Auction Raises $10K

Forest City High School photoThe school divided sections of the gym floor to auction off. Forest City High School photoA high school in Iowa raised more than $10,000 for gym renovations by auctioning off pieces of its aging gym floor. 

Forest City High School ended its online auction of the floor last week, and all but 24 out of 200 pieces were sold. The remaining 4-by-6-foot pieces will be used in shop classes, according to the Summit-Tribune.

The school not only made money on the old floor it was able to save the cost of disposing of it. District superintendent Darwin Lehmann said the minimum bid for a piece was $25, with some reaching as high as $100.

Alumni, current players, residents, students and even people from five states were among the bidders in the auction, Lehmann said.

“A number of different people that had an interest in the floor were given the opportunity to bid on the floor,” he said.

The district decided to keep the roughly 15-by-15-foot center court area, which features the school’s logo. Plans are in the works to display that section.
