A WFB Facebook Poll conducted March 27–30 found that a majority of wood flooring pros were still working, but only 19% said that work hadn’t slowed or had increased since the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent shelter-in-place orders. Here is what pros said they were doing:
56% still working but work/estimates were slowing down.
20% not working—not allowed to by law.
17% still working—no change from before.
5% not working—allowed to by law but choosing not to.
2% still working—more work than before.
Here is a sampling of what pros had to say about what’s going on in their markets:
Steve Albert We are in Philadelphia and are not working; the city shut all construction down. My crew members have applied for UC. I’ve dropped my WC payroll as low as possible and am filing a claim for loss of work through my GL. Not that I expect to be compensated, but for documentation if it turns out that I need government subsidies. This was suggested by my agent.
Sylvain Oxygene Working until Tuesday for a rental apartment with moving people. The country is shut down here, so no one is essential work. I had a cop investigating me yesterday!
Michael Schuetz Still working, as we fall in the essential category. Now we are just two of us (my dad and myself) in an empty (not lived in) house.
Jeff Munsch I've just been trying to move all my booked jobs in vacant home up and bumping the occupied homes out … so far, so good, but estimates are flatlined.
Glenn Harris Finishing up a job today, then going on lockdown.
Greg Warren Final coat tomorrow, then I am hanging out in the house. Maybe collect unemployment and the $600 weekly Stem check. I have two jobs that were postponed, and the phone is not ringing.
Jim Hyde New Jersey has the second most cases and we haven't even peaked yet. I still have people (in South Jersey) calling and actually getting mad that I'm not doing estimates right now. I have four jobs going and just want to stay home, but people don't want to hear it.
Mike DesRosiers We have limited ourselves to new construction. But as the crunch comes down to final, there are way too many people around for my liking.
Jason Vivash In Ontario we are also considered an essential service, but people are being cautious. I’ve booked the next 4 weeks off, then booked for 8-10 weeks after that as long as an Ohio mill can make my flooring in time.
David Diaz I have two jobs going in Vineland and Franklinville, N.J. The houses are empty, thank God.
Sean Tupper I had one guy I gave a bid to that said another bidder was aggressively lower than mine. I’m sure people are sitting at home and willing to work for nothing right now. Luckily that’s not me. I had to work for peanuts during Obama’s presidency. Let’s get this over so we can all thrive again like it’s been the last 3 1/2 years.
