The U.S. is offering a 90-day deferment period for importers to pay certain duties, taxes and fees. The deferment is available to U.S. importers facing “significant financial hardship” due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The deferment does not affect the deadlines for antidumping duties or Chinese products that are subject to U.S. tariffs.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the deferment will provide “much-needed relief to affected businesses.” California Senator Dianne Feinstein said the delay was a step in the right direction, but that the U.S. should go further and defer all tariff payments for 90 days or until the economic crisis passes, The Fence Post reports.
