The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration unleashed thousands of dollars in fines on construction and home improvement companies, including The Home Depot, for failing to follow the state’s required COVID-19 safety guidelines.
The Home Depot in Dearborn Heights was fined $4,000 for failing to designate a COVID-19 workplace supervisor, failing to conduct a daily health screening, failing to require face coverings when social distance could not be maintained, and failing to maintain/retain documentation for daily health screenings.
Construction companies BD Construction, Daniel Sanchez, Nain Construction, GVC Painting Co. Inc. and Kauffmann Construction Inc. were each fined $2,100 for failure to require face coverings when social distance could not be maintained, failing to maintain social distancing where possible, a lack of preparedness and response plan, and failing to train employees on COVID-19 guidelines. American Eagle Home Improvement was fined $2,100 for a lack of social distancing and failure to use masks or face coverings.
MIOSHA also cited several roofing companies for COVID-19 safety violations. ABSR Inc. Story Roofing Company Inc. was fined $4,200, D&D Roofing 4G LLC was fined $2,800, and Valentin Roofing LLC and Gillespie Roofing were both fined $2,100.
“The MIOSHA investigations determined that these employers were not taking precautions to protect employees and their communities from the spread of COVID-19,” MIOSHA Director Bart Pickelman said in a statement. “Failure to follow guidelines puts everyone at risk, and these citations are meant to reiterate the employer’s responsibility to protect their employees.”
