Ecosia, a search engine that donates 80% of its earnings to reforestation nonprofits, introduced what it is calling “the world’s first wooden debit card”––TreeCard.
The Mastercard debit card features wood grain from sustainably sourced cherry wood, according to the company’s website. The card’s core is made from recycled plastic bottles. For every $60 spent on the card, the company pledges to plant one tree.
The card is free and charges merchants a fee that is used to plant the trees. The company states that 80% of interchange fee profits go toward Ecosia tree planting projects each month.
Users can also track how many trees they’ve planted using the card’s accompanying app.Â
