The Brazilian Amazon, which contributed 43.1% of the world’s forest destruction in 2022, recorded a 34% decline in illegal logging in the first six months of 2023 compared with the same period last year, NPR reported.
The drop in illegal forest clearing came under Brazil’s new President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has made stopping illegal logging one of his administration’s primary goals, promising to end it completely by 2030.
Deforestation in Brazil’s portion of the Amazon hit record highs under the country’s previous administration, which was led by President Jair Bolsonaro.
