But if you're one of the 11.5 million Americans looking for work, LinkedIn can be a great asset. As someone who landed my current job using LinkedIn, I felt compelled to share some tips.

Complete Your Profile: Do more than just post your résumé. Add a profile picture. List projects you've worked on and awards you've won. LinkedIn is making it easier to draw attention to your unique skills and achievements, allowing users to embed video and links on their profile.

Customize Your Search: The "Jobs" tab offers all sorts of customizable options. Get updates on jobs you're interested in sent right to your email. Search specific companies you'd like to work for to see what jobs are available. And don't worry, you can keep your job searching activity private. Your friends (or current coworkers) won't see you're looking around.

Get What You Pay For: Upgrading to a premium "Job Seeker" account ($29.95/month) unlocks more opportunities, such as letting you see who posted the job and allowing you to contact them directly. Plus, premium users can view salary information and can get their applications added to the top of the virtual pile. Finally, the premium account also allows you to see everyone viewing your profile. Yes, it costs money, but how much would you pay to land a better job?
