A question I get asked a lot is: "What social media networks should my company be on?" Just when you were getting comfortable with Facebook and Twitter, everyone is talking about Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, Tumblr and Google+. Ok, no one besides Google is talking about Google+, but you get the point.
In a rush of excitement, or maybe begrudgingly because you're "supposed to," it can be tempting to fire up a new account and give it a try. The problem is that you only have so much time. And before you spend valuable time starting a new account and trying to obtain fans or followers, it's important to ask: What's the point? Do you have a long-term goal, or will this account quickly fizzle out?
As with many things in life, when it comes to social media it is better to do one or two things extremely well as opposed to being mediocre at five things. Master one or two platforms first. Be known as the contractor with the most informative Twitter feed or the best videos on YouTube. Only once you've developed a voice and your followers are clamoring for more should you move on to the next social media craze.
So this year, if you're debating launching a new social account just to "keep up," take it from me: Relax, don't do it.
