It happened three years ago. Albany, N.Y.-based MacFawn Fire & Flood Restoration was called in to renovate a bedroom floor that had been damaged in a fire. They pulled the carpeting out and noticed the wood floor beneath it was strangely lopsided. They investigated further, and began uncovering additional layers of carpeting under the wood. “The layers just kept going and going and going,” laughs McFawn Senior VP Evan MacFawn. In total, they found eight layers of carpeting stacked on top of each other. The company made sure to film the odd discovery at the time for documentation. Fast-forward to 2022 and the company was looking to grow its TikTok; McFawn dug into his archive and retrieved the carpet layer video. A day after it was posted, the video reached over 3 million views, and, much like the carpet layers themselves, the views seemed to keep coming. The video eventually reached 16 million views. The company’s social media following surged, which helped build restoration contacts around the country who’d seen the viral video. “We see crazing things every day and don’t really think about it,” McFawn says. “I didn’t think the video was anything special, but clearly the internet did. It resonated with both contractors and people who did not know the industry.”
