Johnny Rodriguez began noticing a surge in the popularity of hand-scraped wood floors in North Texas as far back as 1997—and the popularity hasn’t died down. “I’Il recommend it if they have more than one pet, but it’s usually why they call on us,” says Rodriguez, who runs Hurst, Texas-based J Rodz Flooring. The hand-scraped flooring is typically red or white oak in 4–7-inch widths. The durability and rustic look are a big draw, adds Rodriguez: “It is a particular taste, not for all. But my clients can’t get enough.” And, personally, Rodriguez agrees: “I love floors with character and attitude.”
