When it comes to web videos for your business, I’m reminded of the “sex in high school” metaphor: Everyone’s talking about doing it, very few are doing it and if they are, they probably aren’t very good at it. So I have some tips to help you correct common mistakes … in your web videos, that is.

1. Poor lighting:

Lighting is perhaps the most important aspect to any video. If it’s bad, your video will be bad. If working with only available light, make sure the subjects have light shining directly on them from the front. Avoid light directly behind or to the side, as it can cause harsh shadows. It might also be worth dusting off your camera’s instruction manual to learn how to adjust the exposure.

2. Poor sound:

If the viewer’s first thought when you start speaking is, “What’s wrong with the sound?” they’re already distracted from your message. A microphone should be used when possible. You can find a decent microphone to fit just about any camera (even your iPhone or iPad) for less than $100.

3. Poor Preparation:

If you’re appearing on camera, have a plan. What is the purpose? What are you going to wear? What are you going to say? A polished, concise message is best. If you’re shooting footage of one of your newly finished jobs, plan out the shots in advance. Is all your gear out of the picture?

While these tips won’t help you win any Academy Awards, a little preparation will give your videos—and in turn, your business—a polished look.
